What is sun damage?

While sunshine has many benefits, it’s no secret it can take a toll on skin. Signs of sun damage, which accumulates over time, include brown or age spots, hyperpigmentation, melasma, lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. The good news is there are effective treatments that can reverse the damage, and it’s never too late to start the repair process.

What causes sun damage?

When solar rays reach your skin, ultraviolet radiation is absorbed into the tissue. The radiation from these UVA and UVB rays causes damage to the skin in a variety of ways, including by breaking down collagen and elastin fibers, which are essential to maintaining healthy, firm skin that doesn’t sag or wrinkle. Additionally, this radiation causes additional melanin production to protect the skin, but with age, melanin often appears clustered or uneven rather than as a smooth tan.

How can sun damage be treated?

There are a variety of ways to treat sun damage, from treatments such as lasers and peels to products like prescription creams and medical-grade skincare. In nearly every case, a combination of treatments and skincare will produce far better results than just treatments or skincare alone.

It is critical to take a methodical and scientific approach to treating sun damage, rather than experimenting with treatments that are trending or popular. Some treatments or products that work well for one individual may not work, or can worsen the condition, for another individual. Because of this, our treatment and product choices are personalized based on your skin, and we will create a thorough treatment plan at your first visit based on our 90+ years of aesthetic experience.

Chemical Peels

The latest generation of chemical peels target sun damage and hyperpigmentation gently yet effectively. The peels correct pigmentation problems, brighten the skin, and reduce the appearance of sun and age spots. Good for most skin types, the peels work well on all skin colors, including darker complexions, which traditionally did not fare well with chemical peels.

IPL

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses light energy to selectively target sunspots and other sun damaged areas. IPL heats the targeted pigmented area without heating up surrounding tissue. The heated pigment is lifted to the surface of the skin and is then naturally removed through the skin turnover process.
