What causes hair loss in men?
For men, the most common causes of hair loss include genetics/heredity, stress, medical conditions, and normal aging. Androgenetic alopecia, a genetic/hereditary condition commonly known as male pattern baldness, is responsible for about 95% of hair loss in men.
In the case of male pattern baldness, hair on the top of the head begins to thin and the hairline typically recedes. Over time, this can lead to hair that is present in a horseshoe shape.
This type of hair loss is caused by the hair follicles on the head having a genetic sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is a byproduct of testosterone. These hair follicles progressively shrink, causing the hair to have a shortened lifespan.
Although there are currently no treatments that can cure this genetic predisposition, there are a variety of solutions to help minimize the effects.
What are the treatment options for thinning hair?
Classic treatment options for hair loss in men include medications, which have frequent side effects, and hair transplants, which require long surgical procedures and downtime. While these have historically been popular methods, further scientific research has prompted more advanced treatments with minimal risk and side effects.
Non-surgical treatments such as PRP hair restoration and, more recently, KeraLase hair restoration, have become favorable amongst doctors and other hair specialists for improvement of thinning hair. With these treatments, growth factors are used to stimulate and nourish the hair follicles to promote growth.
Research in the past decade has also demonstrated benefits of low-level light therapy (LLLT) for treatment of hair loss by improving nutrient flow to the follicles and prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle.
Advances in neutraceuticals, which are natural-based alternatives to pharmaceuticals, have shown promising results. Supplements such as Nutrafol have been clinically proven to help improve hair growth by delivering key vitamins, nutrients, and other beneficial natural compounds while inhibiting DHT.
Customized combination therapies deliver superior results.
While any of the treatments mentioned above are likely to promote hair growth in many men, it is important to select the optimal combination of treatments for best results and long-term benefits. At Aesthetic Center of New Jersey, our hair restoration programs are tailored to each individual. We’ll help you select the right treatments for your needs.
